Description
“Shaped by profuse, finely wrought tannins and fresh berry flavors.”
The oldest Grenache vines in Clare Valley. Planted in 1932. Still producing fruit of extraordinary depth and concentration — if you know how to listen.
The Glen Kelly Vineyard on Springfarm Road holds both age and history. These bush vines, planted in 1932, represent the oldest Grenache in Clare Valley. Ninety-four years of deep root systems through rich red soil over ironstone have created vines of remarkable concentration and complexity, with tiny yields and intense fruit.
Made with restraint and respect — east-west oriented bush vines, whole bunch pressed, minimal intervention — this Grenache is simultaneously dark and elegant, earthy and precise. It will reward cellaring generously.
The 2025 Ironstone won Gold and was named Best Clare Valley Grenache — the only Gold in its class. The same show named Crabtree the Clare Valley’s Best Small Producer.

“Ironstone is the one that humbles you a bit. Ninety-four-year-old vines don’t care how good your winemaking is — they’ve been doing this since long before any of us were around.”
Jason Cane · Owner, Crabtree WinesThis series explores how Grenache expresses three different ancient soils across Clare Valley. Variety, winemaker and vintage remain constant across all three wines — only the earth changes. This is the Ironstone expression. Also available: Limestone (Silver) and Quartzite (Silver), or all three in the Regolith Mixed Six. Available as a single bottle.
