Crabtree Watervale Wines
Made by family.
For people who love
real wine.
Watervale, Clare Valley · South Australia · Est. 1984
We’re not a big winery. We never wanted to be. We’re a family — Jason, Cristy, little Hugh, and Richard and Leanne — who believed that the best wine comes from people who care deeply about every single vine, every single vintage, and every single person who walks through our cellar door.
The beginning
A sommelier who decided to back himself.
Jason Cane didn’t come to wine by accident. After earning a scholarship to study at the world-renowned Le Cordon Bleu Hotel Management School, he built a career as a sommelier in some of Australia’s finest restaurants — developing a palate and a philosophy that fine wine is deeply personal.
He eventually found himself at Kilikanoon Wines in Clare Valley, quietly falling in love with the region’s red soil, cool nights, and extraordinary Riesling. When the winery was acquired by foreign investors, Jason faced a choice: stay, or go out on his own.
He chose Crabtree. He hasn’t looked back.
Head of Hospitality & Wine Education
From nursing to wine — caring is caring.
Cristy was a nurse when COVID arrived and turned the world upside down. With the winery newly purchased and the world in lockdown, she made a quiet, extraordinary pivot — bringing her skills as a carer, a communicator, and a deeply warm human being into the cellar door.
It turns out nursing and wine education have more in common than you’d think. Both require patience, genuine curiosity about people, and the ability to make someone feel truly looked after.
When you visit Crabtree, there’s a very good chance Cristy is the one who makes you feel at home. That’s not an accident. That’s just who she is.
“We didn’t buy Crabtree to make wine for a spreadsheet. We bought it because this land, these vines, and the people who visit us — they deserve something made with real love.” — Jason Cane, Co-owner, Crabtree Watervale Wines
The Believers
The people who made it all possible.
Richard and Leanne Cane are the reason Crabtree exists. As the winery’s major shareholders, they believed in Jason’s vision when it was still just a dream — and backed him to make it real. Without them, none of this happens.
Their lives are still firmly rooted on their broad acre farm on South Australia’s Yorke Peninsula — about an hour and fifteen minutes from Watervale. They built their careers across farming and the technology industry, running a successful computer business for many years. But whenever Jason and Cristy need them, they make the drive. You’ll find them in the winery during vintage, welcoming guests at the cellar door, and doing whatever needs doing — because that’s what family does.
They didn’t just invest money. They invested trust. And for that, we are endlessly grateful.
The next generation
Hugh. Age 2. Already quality control.
Hugh Cane arrived into a family mid-vintage — which means he’s been surrounded by the sounds, smells and rhythms of winemaking since before he could walk. He takes his role very seriously.
Recently spotted in the winery using a wine thief to sample the 2026 Riesling juice straight from the tank, Hugh’s verdict was enthusiastically positive. He also supervises his dad at the press, just to make sure standards are being maintained.
He is, without question, the most charming member of the Crabtree team. And the dog agrees.

Enthusiastic taster of grape juice. Future winemaker. Current chaos creator. Absolutely indispensable.
Come and meet us in Watervale.
Our cellar door has been welcoming visitors since 1984. The 1849 homestead, the views across the valley, the vines that have been here since 1946 — none of it means anything without people to share it with.
We’re open seven days. Dogs welcome. Kids welcome. Hugh will probably be running around somewhere. Come as you are.
