BACK VINTAGE 6-PACK
You've asked for it and now with our new barrel shed built we've been sorting, tasting and now we can deliver - our range of back vintage reds!
Below are some notes and reflections on the wines by Cristy.
She still regards herself as a novice in wine tasting and is no Halliday – although she does know who that is! That aside, Cristy is quite partial to reds with soft, velvety body, approachable tannin and big fruit flavours. Therefore, a high score from Cristy means the wine is most likely well balanced, easy drinking with a great depth of flavour.
TEMPRANILLO 2015 7.5/10
First wine I tried from the six and oh my gosh! Soft, smooth, medium body with big flavours of dark plum and mulberry and something a little herbaceous and familiar that I can’t quite identify. Cherry ripe perhaps? Still has that underlying Tempranillo spice that makes the wine moreish and satisfying. In true Cadbury fashion I had a glass and a half but could have easily finished the bottle.
SHIRAZ 2009 7/10
Full-bodied with a big punch of blackberry, black cherry and liquorice. The wine has retained a significant acid backbone, giving structure and balance. Traces of subtle smoke and cedar wood. This would go really nice with a big piece of protein. Decanting or aerating first is recommended.
SHIRAZ 2016 8/10
Soft, smooth juicy black fruits and dark chocolate. Andrew Kenny our winemaker said that 2016 was a great year for Clare Valley reds and this was obvious from first sip! Bold yet balanced, complex yet subtle herbaceous notes. Full-bodied to pair with red meat but also yummy and soft to drink by the glass on its own.
TEMPRANILLO 2012 7.5/10
Once again, this old Tempranillo has surprised me! That velvety texture with rich red and black fruits. Dark chocolate and aniseed on the finish. Medium-bodied, such an easy-drinking juicy red! This wine has just become a teenager and like my son Hamish (born in 2012), has so much to give!
Jason always describes Clare Valley Cabernet Sauvignon as “black forest cake”. Big dark berries and dark chocolate with the subtle linger of green capsicum and you’ve got the 2013 Cab Sav! Elegantly soft but with that unmistakeable Watervale slate-minerality. Good thing I get to type this tasting note because minerality is not a word I can pronounce, especially after another glass! I could sip and describe until there is no more!
CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2017 7/10
By far the most herbaceous and complex of the 6. The 2017 Cabernet hits you with dark cherry and green capsicum and finishes with savoury cocoa and oak. This wine is soft and bold. Again, I get hints of that Watervale limestone minerality. One thing I think of whenever tasting Cabernet is a good Cabernet Sauvignon should have all the “colours” and here in the 2017 we have the GREEN capsicum, BROWN cocoa and earth, RED cherry, BLUE berries, BLACK cherry, berries and plum.
