2013 Robert Crabtree Riesling

We thought it was high time founder and acclaimed winemaker Robert Crabtree returned to the limelight in celebration of such a milestone moment in our history. We proudly present the 2013 Robert Crabtree Watervale Riesling produced from two different blocks from our estate grown fruit. With all the fresh punchy citrus characteristics expected of a Watervale riesling, the two parcels were selected for this special release because of their finesse and high natural acidity which will make this riesling long lived in the cellar. With just 120 cases and 120 magnums produced this wine is a rare treat for the riesling connoisseur. Only available at Cellar Door or Online and selling fast.

With delicate aromatics of citrus spice, the Robert Crabtree Watervale Riesling is a tightly wound succulent style with fruit concentration and a long finish. Sealed with a screwcap to ensure integrity of product, with careful cellaring this wine should mature gracefully for 20+ years.

Serve with sashimi and oysters.

This wine has its origins in both confidence and doubt. It comes from two small blocks of the Crabtree Watervale Estate. One I was always sure produced the best riesling on the property – classic riesling ground of red loam in limestone, deep rooted dry-grown and south facing.

We were full of doubt when planting the other block, a pretty ordinary patch once occupied by poorly performing Pedro Ximinez. I planted the Orlando Steingarten clone with little hope and no confidence. After 10 years of not doing much the ugly duckling emerged as swans and the fruit is nothing short of spectacular.

The wine driven by abundant fruit and pristine natural acidity. It stretches long over the palate and should continue to develop, given the chance, over a couple of decades. It was a great year, Kerri and Brendan and the team have handled the fruit with a sure touch and made a lively wine. It is one that I would love to have made myself but am very happy to attach my name to.
