Watervale

Watervale is in the centre of the Clare Valley, and is where our winery and vineyards are located. It is a town of some 250 people, one shop, a garage, a pub, a school, a library, two churches, and five wineries. It was laid out as a town in 1839, but has never reached in size the dreams of its founder and promoter.

Like some of the villages of Burgundy and Alsace, Watervale has a name and reputation that belies its size, especially for lovers of Riesling. The Clare Valley in general is especially known for Riesling and many of the finest vineyards are in Watervale. Here there is a conjunction of suitable soils – loam on limestone or loam on shale (all well-draining) – and climate, warmth sunshine and cool nights – and a long history of experience with the variety, both in the vineyard and winery.
